NiTi-based Foams

FIGURE 1: Shape-memory NiTi foam with about 50% open porosity, processed by partial densification of pre-alloyed NiTi powders. (Micrograph by Ampika Bansiddhi)

NiTi is a shape-memory materials with applications as a biomaterial and as a smart actuator in advanced aerospace applications.  We are developing processes for NiTi foams (both shape-memory and superelastic compositions) with open or closed porosity, adapting various methods developed for aluminum and titanium foams.  The microstructure and compressive mechanical properties at ambient temperature are also investigated.
